Moving away from home for University is one of the best things I have done so far in my life. Not only have I built up my confidence but I have learnt a lot of new things about life itself as well as about myself. I've also learnt to navigate myself around a new city and I have to say that Newcastle is an amazing place. I have a new friendship group and I can see a couple of people being a friend for life as well as meeting my boyfriend. However, there are downsides to almost everything in life, including moving away from home.
This is what I hate the most about University - not being able to see family frequently. The only time I get to see any of my family is at Christmas, Easter and summer and maybe the odd day here or there if I go home for a few days or they come to visit me. It's a big struggle not being able to see your parents everyday, its even hard not seeing my siblings no matter how annoying they can get. But family is just a text, phone call or FaceTime away so it's not always as bad as it seems. When I'm really homesick, all I want to hear is my mum and dad's voice so a simple phone call can sort that right out. Meeting my boyfriend has definitely helped with the homesickness too, sometimes you just need a hug and I can totally rely on him to make me feel better.
Friends
I have lost almost all contact with my friends from school and sixth form back home due to being busy with my own life now and realising that they weren't actual genuine friends but users. Meeting my friends here at University helped me realise that. Of course I have met plenty of fake people at University too but meeting fake people anywhere is inevitable - you've just got to work out who's real and who's fake which took me a while to work out I have to say.
Food
Say goodbye to Sunday dinner and tasty, homemade and wholesome food. Say hello to pasta! I have to say I love pasta, I don't think I'll ever get bored of it and adding different vegetables and using different pasta sauces means pasta isn't as boring as it may seem. Making 3 meals a day can get pretty boring and repetitive though, I miss having food made for me on a daily basis.
Cleaning
General cleaning of the house can get boring. Hoovering, dusting, bleaching. They are all really dull and repetitive tasks but they have to be done. I know that these tasks sound pretty easy but having to do them does get frustrating which I'm sure you'll agree with if you have moved out of your parent's house.
Travel
Public transport is the only way I get around Newcastle as I don't drive and probably wouldn't even have a car if I did. This means I have to make extra time to be where I need to be, I can't just hop in a car and ask my mum or dad to drive me somewhere.
Having to do everything yourself
Washing clothes, buying food, cleaning, buying toiletries it all adds up. Time adds up, money adds up. Basically everything your parents do, you have to do for yourself and you don't realise how much they actually do for you until you have to do it for yourself. You don't realise how time consuming and costly these tasks are.
Motivation
At home, I always had my parents there telling me to do work and revise. Here, I have no one to tell me that as all us students are the same - we can't be bothered. But my parents do still motivate me through phone calls and texts.
What do you miss about living at home? Do simple tasks annoy you?
