My favourite tennis tournament Wimbledon began today! Tennis is my favourite sport to watch (but not so much play as I have reminded people of a tennis player from the 1980's called John McEnroe - in other words I like to slam my tennis racket down when things don't go my way, which unfortunately is a lot! Playing tennis certainly isn't my forte so I'll just stick to watching it.)
I get so involved when it comes to watching tennis matches such as yelling at the TV screen, particularly the higher ranked men's matches. I very rarely watch the women's tennis as some of the noises they make are too off-putting for me and the matches don't seem as energised and powerful as the men's. But I'm sure I'll be watching the women's final.
Djokovic is my favourite tennis player and not because he's ranked number 1 in the world. I like his style and his obvious commitment to tennis which is proved by where he is today as well as his passion for the sport. I also like the fact that he can speak several languages, not that that is related to tennis in anyway but it means he can do an interview in lots of countries speaking the nation's language which I think is highly impressive. I would love to speak a whole range of languages. I also think he has great sportsmanship unlike a couple of players who swear on court and throw their rackets around.
Why do I love Wimbledon so much? The dress code at Wimbledon differs from the other 3 major tennis tournaments which take place in France, the US and Australia. When playing at Wimbledon, you have to wear all white. This is a tradition which dates back to the 1800's as sweat spots that can be seen on coloured clothing were seen as off-putting and unappealing. I also like the fact that strawberries and cream are also a tradition, and a yummy one at that! 142 000 portions of English strawberries are expected to be sold along with 7000 litres of cream in the short space of just 2 weeks! I also prefer watching tennis being played on grass as healthy, green grass reminds me that it's summer. A reminder that it's summer is needed in England because the weather doesn't indicate it! I also like the fact that it is a major sporting event which happens in England every single summer. My dream is to actually go and watch a few matches at Wimbledon so I can see what it's like to be part of the whole atmosphere.
Unfortunately I missed today's matches as I have had rather a busy day but I've already checked on the scores of today's matches with Djokovic winning his first round match much to my happiness.
I think Wimbledon is going to be interesting this year. I think the contenders for the title this year are Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka. I think Djokovic is the most likely person to win even though he was the runner up to Wawrinka at the French Open a couple of weeks ago so if Wawrinka is still playing to the standard he was in the final of the French Open, then Wawrinka may just snatch the title from Djokovic's hands. Murray is also in with a chance even though I don't think he played too well in the French Open this year but he did win Queen's just over a week ago. I don't think Nadal is in with a chance this year just because he is still recovering from surgery on his appendix that he underwent last year but I think he will return with a mission to get back to winning next year. Although Federer is still playing well, I still think he isn't up to the standard that Djokovic and Murray have set.
Winners over the last 5 years of Wimbledon
2014 - Djokovic
2013 - Murray
2012 - Federer
2011 - Djokovic
2010 - Nadal
My money is on Djokovic.
Are you a fan of Wimbledon? Who's your favourite tennis player? Who do you think is going to win the title this year?
