SUMMER GOALS

Now that I've finished University for the summer and don't have an awful lot to do, I have created a set of goals that I am going to aim to achieve by the time I start University again in September. I've decided I want to stay in Newcastle rather than go home back to Sheffield for the summer just because my life is up here now, apart from my family that is. The goals I have set are actually realistic as when I have created goals in the past, most were the total opposite.

The aim of goals is to make them challenging but achievable. It is better to set goals that aren't too hard to start with as goals can be created which become progressively harder when easier ones are achieved. It also means that you are more likely to stick to and achieve these goals as making them too hard could cause you to go off route in achieving these goals meaning in the long run, no goals may actually be achieved.

My first and most important goal is to get a part time job somewhere. The main reason that I would like a job is not for the money aspect but more for keeping busy and gaining experience that I can use in the future. I have applied to a few so far and although it is a long and lengthy process, I am determined to do a couple of hours of job hunting everyday to maximise my chance of getting an interview.

My second goal is to do some volunteering to give back to the community. Because my degree is based on health, I'd like to volunteer in either a hospital or a charity shop such as Oxfam or the British Heart Foundation, mainly because I am interested in this and I am aspiring to work in the health sector once I have completed my degree in a year's time (which is very daunting!)

My third goal is to improve my fitness. I have recently joined the gym which you can read all about here so I am already on my way to achieving this goal. I know that it isn't going to be an immediate change but by the end of the summer, I am hoping to see some sort of change to my fitness which is realistic as I do have almost 4 months!

My forth goal is to start doing things that I love to do but haven't managed to do because of my lack of free time at University. One of those is drawing. I used to create art all the time as I did A Level Art which was actually the highest grade I achieved in all the subjects I did. I think everyone needs time to be creative, perhaps not just in art but maybe music or writing for example, as it is a way of expressing yourself as well as de-stressing, I also want to get back into reading as this allows me to be in my own little bubble and just be separated from the world for a while.

I think these goals are achievable and realistic and I haven't set too many either which is also a mistake I have done in the past. Once I have ticked a goal off my list, I will create a new goal to further increase the previous goal or create a new goal altogether.

Are you planning on creating goals for the summer? Do you think goals work?
