Do you find that you lack energy? Not necessarily from going to the gym and waking up with aching muscles the next morning but do you physically struggle to get out of bed in the morning? I know I do. Even if I have a 10 hour sleep, I still feel tired which is particularly worrying when 8 hours sleep is the recommended amount of sleep to have per night. It's not even the fact that I have a hard day ahead which can of course affect sleep or make you reluctant to actually get out of bed. Even if I have planned a day of watching films, I still feel physically drained when I wake up.
This needs to change sooner rather than later in my case as I don't only have a job but I have University work as well as socialising to do so my energy needs somewhat of a boost. I've done some research in how to increase energy levels which I hope is going to help me but also you if you lack energy too.
Don't skip meals, especially breakfast. Breaking the 'fast' as soon as you wake up is the most beneficial time to eat as it helps provide energy to the body throughout the day.
Eat less sugar as blood sugar should be kept at a constant level. Sugar increases blood sugar levels which initially increases energy but then a drop in blood sugar levels once the sugar has worn off can leave you feeling tired.
Eat at regular times of the day to keep blood sugar levels constant.
Eat more magnesium which can help in the biochemical reactions in the body which convert glucose into energy. Magnesium can be found in foods such as almonds, hazelnuts, cashews and bran cereal. Soaking nuts overnight in water can further increase the nutritional value.
Have a snack that combines protein, a little fat and some fibre such as peanut butter. Another good snack is chia seeds which contains protein, B vitamins and fibre.
Eat foods containing omega-3 fatty acids which help improve brain function and improve your mood. Read my previous post here all about omega-3.
Yoghurt can help aid in digestion meaning more nutrition from the food you eat can be used thus reducing fatigue.
Eat fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure vitamin and mineral intake is sufficient.
Go for a 10 minute walk which has been significantly proven to increase energy levels for 2 hours. Working out can also increase productivity and energy levels.
Drink more water as dehydration can make you feel as though you have a lack of energy.
Make sure you have at least 8 hours sleep at night.
If you still feel tired after trying out some of these points for a few weeks, I would suggest paying a trip to the Doctors as they may be able to test you for anaemia or thyroid problems which can affect energy levels.

Do you have any tips for increasing energy levels?
I don't always have the highest energy levels, so I will try and use some of these tips! Sometimes I wake up at 11am on a weekend, but even after 10/11 hours of sleep I can still feel tired! x
